How does Topspin Virtualise the Server?
Topspin allows complete server personalities to be assigned to generic stateless servers over the server switch fabric. By separating the server personality from the physical infrastructure Topspin makes it possible to create customized virtual servers on-demand out of industry standard components.

Four Major Building Blocks
The Topspin virtualization solution includes four major building blocks:

1. High Performance Server-to-Server Connectivity: Create a flexible grid using the 10Gbps price/performance of the InfiniBand standard.
2. Seamless I/O and Storage Connectivity: Topspin's Topology Transparency technology runs IP, SAN, and Server-to-Server communications on a unified 10Gbps fabric without requiring management or infrastructure changes.
3. Virtualization and Boot Services: Make servers truly "stateless" by loading their personalities over the network, including any combination of application, OS, storage, security, and I/O resources.
4. VFrame server virtualization software suite: VFrame embeds policy and provisioning intelligence into the server switch hardware. This allows the Topspin server switch to be programmed with the intelligence to determine when and how to create virtual servers out of shared resources.

What is the VFrame Software Suite?
The VFrameT software suite enables data center managers and software partners to easily program Topspin Server Switches with the policies necessary to let them implement virtual servers on-demand.


The VFrame Software Suite includes (1) embedded logic to receive,interpret, and enforce policies; (2) an SDK/API to allow customers and partners to program the switch; and (3) VFrame Director software to centrally distribute policy to a Server Switch fabric.
